Ian Cumens of Lindell, Pa took top honors in the ATQMRA opener at Sundance Vacation Speedway besting Matt Janisch and Frank Fischer.  Heat races were won by Cumens and Janisch.  A strong crop of rookie contenders were on hand for the season opener with Joe Lord Jr. besting the rest of the rookies.  Next up for the ATQMRA is its return to Mahoning Valley Speedway in Lehighton Saturday May 22nd.

Janisch took full advantage of his pole starting position to move into the lead on the initial green with Ian Cumens falling into second.  Janisch and Cumens raced nose to tail and side by side with Cumens running his patented outside line.  Cumens decisive move came on lap 15 when Janisch bobbled in lapped traffic allowing Cumens to slip past and race to the checkered flag for his first win of the season.

Third finishing Frank Fischer had to come from deeper in the pack to reach third by race end earning the Travelsmith's hard Charger of the race award.  Tim Behmer advanced to fourth.  Paul Lotier finished fifth earning the Brice's NAPA contingency award.

Janisch and Cumens each won their heats in convincing fashion.  Janisch of Nazareth, Pa posted the fastest lap of the day turning a 12.884 Sec at  93.138 MPH in winning his heat.

The ATQMRA had 5 rookies on hand for the opener all vying for the coveted ATQMRA Rookie Championship.

Rookies in competition with the ATQMRA at Sundance were Buddy Sload of Dunmore Pa,  Josh Dalrymple from Leesport, Pa, Dan Lane Jr. of Elverson, Pa Chad Jones from Ottsville, Pa, and Joe Lord Jr. from Allentown, NJ with Joe Lord finishing 8th as the top rookie of the race in the Tom Williams Badger 9W.

ATQMRA News and notes:  The day saw the return of long time ATQMRA supporter and Championship winning car owner Tom Williams with a second generation of Joe Lord driving his beautifully prepared car.  The Williams 9W was synonymous with the ATQMRA for years.  It is nice to see them return to competition with the organization.   1998 ATQMRA Champion "Hotrod" Jon Gambutti returned to the ATQMRA in the Colin Martin Spitfire Development car after a several year hiatus to score a solid top ten finish.  Next up for the ATQMRA is its return to the lightening fast Mahoning Valley Quarter Mile on Saturday May 22nd where Don Adams will be looking to ad one more victory to his impressive career win list at that track in the Mollet 51 Badger.
