The American Three
Quarter Midget Racing Association made its return to Chemung
Speedrome on Saturday August 30th and put on a
whale of a show. Fans were treated to side by side and
three wide racing with numerous lead changes throughout the
racing action. Frank Fischer charged from his 10th
starting position on the grid to earn his first career
ATQMRA feature win.
Fischer made a clean
sweep of the night by winning his heat race. The other heat
race was won by Matt Janisch.
Being out front in the
feature wasn’t the place to be on this night. After the
initial start was aborted twice with Matt Janisch getting
the jump both times, Richie Coy assumed command on the third
restart only to be overtaken by a hard charging Janisch.
Robin Johnston followed Janisch into the lead and began
applying pressure. A few laps later
Johnston was able to
overtake Janisch for the lead. A determined Alison Cumens
made her way past Janisch for second and started to reel
veteran Johnston in.
Johnston made a move to
the outside in the fourth turn around lap traffic causing
him to spin and turn the lead over to Rookie of the year
contender Alison Cumens.
On the ensuing restart
Janisch and Cumens were the front row. The veteran Janisch
got the jump and assumed command. His turn at the front was
short lived when Cumens moved to the inside and battled side
by side with Janisch for several laps before completing the
pass.
All the while Frank
Fischer was methodically making his way through lap
traffic. Fischer overtook Janisch for second and set his
sights on Cumens. The veteran Fischer who was coming off
consecutive runner up finishes at Mountain Speedway was
determined not to be a bridesmaid on this night. Using lap
traffic to his advantage Fischer overtook Cumens for the
lead and went to work negotiating lapped traffic.
A late race tangle
between Johnston and Zack Martini set up a green white
checkered end to the race. Fischer was able to outdistance
Cumens and Janisch at the finish over a hard charging Chris
DeRitis who came home fourth and Don Adams in fifth.
The next event for the
touring ATQMRA is at Mountain Speedway on Sunday September

ATQMRA News and
Notes: Over a dozen TQ midgets took part in an early
test and tune session to prepare for the night’s racing.
The Jeff Kot mount suffered an engine failure in practice
preventing him from competing in the night’s racing. The
Tim Behmer 96 Badger suffered a rear end failure in
practice. His crew was able to make the necessary repairs
to be ready for the night’s racing. Ryan Tidman raced the
Jim Peruto Keenan Motors Dart 35 car after the 49 Dart he
had been racing was badly damaged at Mountain the previous
week. Fischer took his first feature win in the TQ midgets
after having raced and won Championships in Go Karts at the
now shuttered Flemington Speedway. A special thanks goes
out to track promotor Bob Stapleton for hosing the ATQMRA TQ
midgets at his beautiful facility. Fans in attendance were
treated to side by side and three wide racing and look
forward to the TQ midgets returning to the Speedrome on
October 4th for their season finally.
